UPS will raise rates by 4.9% on average for services commonly used by online retailers. According to a press release issued by UPS, the increases on UPS Ground and UPS Air and International delivery will be effective on the day after Christmas, December 26, 2016. Information about other 2017 UPS rate changes and additional charges will be made available on the site on November 18, 2016.
Each year, UPS and FedEx raise rates so expect a similar announcement from FedEx regarding 2017 rates. UPS will charge more for packages 48 inches or larger, down from 60 inches for international shipping. Other rates for 2017 include a $0.35 increase in the additional handling fee, which currently stands at $11.00.
UPS said it is continuing to invest “in the speed, scope and coverage of our transportation network. Rate increases will support ongoing expansion and capabilities enhancements, while UPS strives to maintain the high service levels” that customers expect.
