Major shipping companies such as FedEx and UPS offer money-back guarantees if they deliver packages late. The only catch is that it’s up to customers to apply for refunds.

“How many people even realize if a package they’ve sent is late?” Brian Gibbs asked.

Gibbs, 34, launched a company with business partner Brandon Byers in 2006 that searches out refunds online for its clients and then applies for them. Called Refund Retriever, the business revolves around a proprietary software program that can access both shippers’ and clients’ websites and determine whether a refund is due.

“We knew that if we were going to be looking at every single package for an even relatively small shipper, that automation would be the key,” said Byers, also 34. “The hard part was getting the computer to talk to shippers’ websites automatically and tie that back to an internal database.”

According to Gibbs, packages arrive late about 10 percent of the time, but shippers refund only a portion of those late arrivals. Refund Retriever keeps 50 percent of any refunds credited.

Gibbs first heard about a similar company when he owned an Internet auction company. Because he shipped packages for clients after first handling their online auctions, he said he was approached by a company that offered a similar service.

“They told me they could get me these refunds, but it turned out they couldn’t,” Gibbs said. “I didn’t think they were very good at it, even though I thought what they had was a good business idea.”

Byers said the firm holds shippers accountable for their guarantees. “These companies have chosen to offer money-back guarantees; we’re just here to see that they honor them,” he said.
