UPS express and international deliveries have been available on Saturday for many years. The U.S. Postal Service and FedEx both offer ground delivery on Saturday, UPS will now pick up and sort packages on Saturday for the first time ever. Residential customers can receive ground shipments two days earlier with no special processing or extra cost on the shipper’s part. UPS Ground packages picked up on Saturday can now be delivered as early as Monday. There is no need for businesses to cut off orders on Friday
This change allows UPS to compete with FedEx Home Delivery while offering an extra delivery day since FedEx Home Delivery is on a Tuesday to Saturday schedule. Will FedEx Home Delivery add an extra delivery day?
UPS Ground on Saturday is available to over 5,000 cities throughout the country. Eligible residential packages will now be delivered Saturday, two days earlier with no additional charge or changes in labeling, systems or order processing. Here is a list of metropolitan areas in which UPS Ground on Saturday is available.
UPS is projecting residential ground delivery availability in 6000 cities by the end of 2018.
This new Saturday option is also creating more jobs for UPS drivers. The new weekend drivers will be called Combination Drivers, this is UPS’s solution to union concerns. Combination Drivers will be limited to 25% of the total number of regular delivery drivers.
Could we see the addition of Sunday UPS delivery? During recent negotiations with the Teamsters Union, UPS “has as much said that across the table to us they have absolutely no concrete plans to do Sunday delivery,” Denis Taylor, co-chairman of the Teamsters UPS National Negotiating committee stated. USPS started Sunday deliveries in 2013 for Amazon. Could we see FedEx Home Delivery move to include Monday?
